We Have The Power Against The Devil And His Evil Spirits

Originally Written by: Pastor Alberto Rendon

James 4:7 "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

This is one of my favorite verses about our authority. Here we understand that our submission to God is our great opportunity to receive the power or authority.   Also we can see here how powerful we are that even the devil is afraid of us.

The devil here is Satan, he is the leader of all evil spirits. His work in the life of the people is to destroy with many kinds of tactics and strategies. He is also called a deceiver, this is one of his tactics to destroy human kinds.

People who do not know their authority against the devil are usually deceived. If the people knew their authority and use it against the devil, they will never be deceived.

We Cannot See Satan And His Evil Spirits

The devil is a spirit. Physically we cannot see spirits. However, we can see the manifestations of their works. It doesn't merely needs a discerning spirit to see the works of the devil. Every evil thing is of the devil, every evil plan and reaction done by men is under the influence of the devil.

We are living on this earth where we are surrounded by the presence of evil. The believers of God are vulnerable to the wiles of the devil.  So, we are commanded to resist the devil and he will flee from us.

How To Resist The Devil

We are not commanded to get away from the devil, but to resist him and he will be the one to get away from us. The Bible says so. Usually the devil is the one that comes to us first, it is not us that come to him in the first place.

The devil will come to our mind injecting negative and bad thoughts. The reasons people doing bad habits because they are influenced by the devil. They are deceived.   For those who believe the authority God has given to them, they can easily detect the negative and bad thoughts and automatically they can resist the devil.

1. We can resist the devil and his evil forces by using the words of command.

Every one who has the authority uses the words of command. It is only seldom to give an authority to a mute person.  Commanding someone to do a task is usually by the words of command. I thinks it's only seldom to command using the action signs.  Using words is more likely in details and understandable.

Although the devil is a spirit, he can hear our words. It is the same with God who is also a spirit when we pray or talk to Him, he can hear our words.  We do not beg or pray to the devil to get away from us but to command him with the authority the we have and he will obey us.

The devil tries to use his authority to command us to do his task and many have obeyed him, the reason there are many evils in this world done by men because of their obedience to the devil. For them that have the knowledge of good and evil based on the word of God, they can easily refuse the commands of the devil and instead they are the one to command the devil get to away from them.

2. We can resist the devil and his evil forces by using the word of God.

We can counter act using the word of God when bad and negative thoughts come into our mind. This is what Jesus did in his temptation in the desert. He always counter the devil with the word of God (Matthew 4:1-10).

It is not only enough that the devil has departed from us and leaving his ways for us to do and we did them actually. We need also to resist his ways, his tactics and his strategies. The devil can command someone to do his job and then left him alone, assuring that someone is doing his work.

We sin when we obey the commands and the temptations of the devil. But we can resist those tactics by a counter act using the word of God - a counter act to the devil's words.

That is why it is very important to have the word of God hidden in hearts. David said,  Psalms 119:11  "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."

The word of God is of great help for us not to commit sin against God. It has a power to set us free even when we have attempted or already cornered by the devil. "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:32).

3. We can resist the devil and his evil forces by believing the word of God firmly.

The cause of the fall of man was disobedience to the word of God. But before the disobedience took place there was a doubt injected in the mind of Eve in the garden of Eden. Doubting the word of God will bring disobedience.

One of the tactics of the devil is to counter act the word of God in our hearts with deception.

"And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." Genesis 3:2-4.

It is very clear that God said to  Adam and Eve not to eat nor touch the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, because when they would eat they will die.

The counter act of the devil using the serpent, "ye shall not surely die... but instead ye shall be as gods,..."

Eve believed the deception of the serpent rather than what God said as the truth.  The truth is true it shall not lie. The devil is a liar and because of that those who are deceived suffered the consequences.

We must believe and stand firm on the Word of God.  If we are determined to believe what God is saying, we can resist the deception of the evil one and we can enjoy the benefits of the word of God.

Conclusion:

Don't think that the devil has power over us, believe that we have the authority over him and his evil spirits in the name of Jesus Christ.  We are not to submit to the devil, only to God the Almighty we are to submit. By the authority God has given us the devil is the one to submit to us. And if we will resist him and his works he can do nothing against us.

That is why Paul boldly says, we are more than conquerors, Romans 8:37 "Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.:
